Chapter twenty-nine

Selverine

Wiping sweat off my forehead, I frowned at the never-ending tree shadows all around us. “How did you become so familiar with the Emberlyn Forest, Willova? It all looks the same to me.”

We’d barely been looking for an hour and had already eliminated three clearings. Between those and a few failed expeditions before today, there couldn’t be that much forest left. Surely we’d find Mella’s cohort soon.

Willova brushed a leafy branch out of the way, creeping forward with more of a hunch than normal. Maybe she was sore from sparring yesterday. “I spent some time in Wrynford as a child.”

“Why’d you—”

“Ouch.” Willova paused, her dress caught on the log she’d just stepped over, revealing an ink-black mark on her calf.

Wasn’t that where I’d scratched her with my trident yesterday? There hadn’t been a tattoo then. Weird.

“You know, if you want to hide those secret tattoos, maybe you should wear some leggings under your dresses.”

She unsnagged the fabric, obsessively smoothing it out and checking for holes.

“What was that one? Some kind of symbol?”

“No. It’s nothing important.” She hurried ahead.

I dashed after her, ducking under a few low-hanging limbs. “If it’s nothing, then why’d you get it tattooed? And why are you so touchy about it?”

“It’s not a tattoo—not permanent. And it’s not a symbol of anything. It’s just a scribble.”

“It looked much fancier than a scribble—”

“Are you still planning to invite Drazdan to the Grand Castors’ Ball?”

I frowned and crossed my arms. “Way to throw in a subtle subject change.”

She glanced away, like she wanted to hide her expression or something.

“Yeah, I’m still planning to ask him to the ball, I guess. I’m just weirded out by the fact you keep bringing it up and looking like you ate a lemon every time, so I haven’t gotten around to it yet.”

She stared into the distance, and it pissed me off.

“Come on, Willova—”

“Shh!” Her hand flashed out to cut me off. “Voices. Over there.”

Crouching behind her, I followed her pointing finger and tried to hear past the breeze rustling the leaves. Was it finally them?

The voices were still too low to make out, and I couldn’t see anyone. So I crept toward the sound, passing Willova and keeping close to the ground.

“Remember, loosen your elbows a bit,” a male voice said. “You’ll get a better workout if you don’t push your elbows all the way in every time you push up, and it’s better for your joints.”

“And you do how many of these at a time?”

That was Mella’s voice. I could just see her pushing up from the ground to sit on a log, sweat marks down the back of her tunic. Where was her mysterious castling? I’d finally find out what it was today!

I crept closer, peering through the scrub. Mella sat facing my direction on a fallen log. The guy sat in front of her with his back to me, a huge gorilla leaning against his back, its knees bent like it was doing a wall sit.

He laughed. “A lot.
